2026 Saint Clair Vintage Report

Saint Clair Family Estate is delighted with the outcome of the 2026 harvest, with the vintage shaping up as one of exceptional quality and balance. Vintage is always about more than just the fruit — it is also about the people who help bring the season to life. Each year, Saint Clair welcomes vintage interns and cellar hands from around the world, all coming together to share in the excitement, hard work, long days and memorable moments that define harvest.

The growing season began with an outstanding spring. From September onwards, Marlborough experienced consistently above-average temperatures with very few cold southerly fronts, resulting in mild and pleasant conditions throughout the region. A near frost-free spring, combined with strong prevailing north-westerly winds, encouraged healthy canopy growth and excellent vine development.

Flowering arrived approximately 7–10 days earlier than normal under calm and settled conditions, resulting in favourable fruit set across all varieties. Spring was also exceptionally dry, with rainfall well below average, setting the scene for a clean and healthy growing season.

Summer began warmly, and some minor vine water stress developed through the middle of the season as dry conditions persisted. Timely and healthy rainfall during January replenished valuable soil moisture reserves at exactly the right moment, allowing vines to recover quickly and continue ripening evenly.

Leading into harvest, Marlborough experienced virtually no rainfall for the six weeks prior to picking. Cooler and more overcast conditions in late summer proved beneficial, slowing the ripening process and allowing for extended hang time on the vines. This additional time helped to build flavour complexity while importantly preserving natural acidity and freshness in the fruit.

Harvest commenced on 24th February with fruit for Sparkling Pinot Noir from the Ben Morven vineyard, with still wine varieties following steadily through the month of March. . One of the most anticipated traditions is the ringing of the winery bell to mark the arrival of the first fruit of the season, followed by a celebratory glass of Saint Clair Dawn Méthode Traditionnelle shared amongst the team. The settled weather conditions throughout harvest allowed the Saint Clair winemaking team the luxury of patience, with no pressure to harvest fruit before it had reached optimal physiological ripeness.

Saint Clair winemakers spend extensive time in the vineyards throughout harvest, continually tasting and assessing fruit flavour and development. Once parcels reach the desired balance of flavour, texture and acidity, fruit is harvested immediately and transported to the winery for processing. The winery’s capacity and efficiency ensure fruit can be received at precisely the right time, preserving freshness and quality.

The 2026 vintage has delivered fruit of outstanding quality, arriving at the winery in pristine condition with no disease issues. The natural acid balance is a standout feature of the season, with very little adjustment required in the winery. Wines are already showing vivid fruit expression, bright aromatics, excellent texture and impressive depth of flavour.

Crop levels were moderate across the region, naturally focusing the vines on quality over quantity. Early indications suggest the wines from vintage 2026 will display exceptional purity, balance and intensity.

With harvest now complete and the wines beginning their journey in the winery, the Saint Clair team reflects proudly on another successful Marlborough vintage. While harvest is demanding and fast-paced, it is these shared experiences, friendships and celebrations that create a unique energy throughout the winery and vineyards, making each vintage truly memorable. Vintage 2026 is one that promises to be remembered for both its remarkable conditions and the quality captured in every glass.
