While the crew at Saint Clair Family Estate are slightly pre-occupied with vintage, some of us did find time to sneak out to catch a glimpse of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on their first New Zealand walkabout.

Before shaking hands and making small talk with the crowd, William and Kate took part in a short ceremony to pay respects to the soldiers who died in World War I and II.
Unlike many of the hundreds of people who packed into Seymour Square in central Blenheim to greet them, we did not have time to stake out a good vantage point three hours before their arrival.

We even heard Wills say he was looking forward to a glass of white Marlborough wine – I could have kicked myself for not having a bottle of Saint Clair Family Estate wine to offer him!
With two weeks of their tour remaining we’ve put together a list of useful things we learned from our experience this morning, for other royal watchers out there.
1. Don’t head for the obvious places where everyone else is milling about. Head to the outskirts, because you’ll have a better chance of catching them when they finish their official business and do their walkabout.
2. Wear high heels, or take a ladder – seriously, it will save your calves.
3. Go solo – you’ll have a much better chance of sifting through the crowd, and getting to the next vantage point by yourself. or…
4. Take a small child and hustle them up to the front. Ensure they have a cute sign and know how to operate a smartphone to get photos for you.
5. Wave a bottle of Saint Clair Family Estate in the air and watch the royals come running.
