Family owned Marlborough winery, Saint Clair Family Estate, have expanded their estate owned properties to include a vineyard in the highly regarded Gimblett Gravels region of Hawkes Bay.
This is a welcome addition to the existing portfolio of Saint Clair’s vineyards located in Marlborough’s Southern Valley, Awatere Valley, Lower Wairau, Rapaura, Fairhall, Omaka Valley and Waihopai Valley.
Saint Clair has been sourcing fruit from this Gimblett Gravels vineyard for a number of years. When the vineyard became available for sale, Saint Clair recognised the opportunity was too good to decline. The Gimblett Gravels is an exciting sub-region that has become world recognised as a premiere area in New Zealand for the production of classic Bordeaux blend varietals and Syrah.
This unique winegrowing region was once under water from the old Ngaruroro River, which dumped gravels, heavier sands and silts that were subsequently exposed following a large flood in the 1860’s. The free-draining deep gravel soils are naturally low in fertility and act as heat storage for the vines. Wines are rich, ripe and full of concentrated fruit flavours.
This purchase follows the recent acquisition of three Marlborough vineyards, one in the Awatere Valley and two in the lower Wairau Valley.
The expansion of vineyards in the Saint Clair portfolio creates a growing avenue for Saint Clair Family Estate to continue to provide customers with wines of excellence across a wide range of varietals and price points which contributes to the ongoing constant evolution of quality and success from this leading New Zealand wine producer.
