The Marlborough Event of the Year
12-May-14
Spectacular Marlborough sunshine greeted the 3,000 competitors and their supporters at the Saint Clair Vineyard Half Marathon held on Saturday. Saint Clair Family Estate is proud to have been the major sponsor of the annual Saint Clair Vineyard Half Marathon since its inception in 2006. This is the eighth year of the event and true to tradition each competitor was rewarded with a celebratory Saint Clair wine for their efforts.
The company is a family business with the next generation also involved. Family members participate in the event each year. As usual Managing Director Neal Ibbotson started the race with a short inspirational speech and watched his wife Judy commence her 21km vineyard run for the eighth time. Son in-law Dave Grono competed in the inaugural ‘dash’ category this year. This section targets faster runners likely to complete the gruelling 21km’s in less than 1 hour 50 minutes for females and 1 hour 40 minutes for males. The male and female winners were perhaps inspired by the thought of the winning prize, their weight in wine. The fastest male (Joshua Mcgettigan, Wellington) completed the course in 1 hour 17 minutes and the fastest female (Annabelle Latz, Renwick) in 1 hour 28 minutes.
The event is a unique Marlborough wine journey, where participants run and/or walk, through the spectacular scenery of Marlborough’s famous vineyards displaying their vivid colours of autumn. A relaxed festival atmosphere surrounded the finish line where supporters and participants lingered at the Saint Clair Cellar Door Café, celebrating achievements, whilst refuelling on a variety of delectable food items such as the legendary Saint Clair homemade chicken pies, Renaissance beer and Saint Clair award winning wine.
Congratulations to all those who took part in the challenging but fun event.
