Saint Clair Family Estate is world renowned for exceptional wines and consistent award success particularly with the Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir varietals. On this occasion it is their Noble Riesling that wins a top award.
Trophy winners for the Bragato Wine Challenge were announced on Thursday night at the Marlborough Convention Centre. The Saint Clair Godfrey’s Creek Reserve Noble Riesling 2013 was awarded the esteemed Champion Dessert Wine. Saint Clair grape growers John and Lynne Walsh provided the exceptional fruit for this wine. John said “I spend all my time trying to prevent botrytis in my vineyard, but this year the winemakers suggested we leave a few rows to allow the rot to occur. Credit must go to the Saint Clair winemakers, Hamish Clark and his team who worked their magic making this exceptional trophy winning wine.”
The judging panel led by Ben Glover described the wine as “just a hint of that paraffin, bees wax like aroma, you then enter into the heavenly scent of apricot and honey played out on the palate and also providing great enjoyment – fantastic wine.”
A Bragato gold medal was also awarded for the Saint Clair Pioneer Block 5 Bull Block Pinot Noir 2012 from the vineyard of Robert and Heather Goulter.
The Bragato wine awards recognise viticulture excellence and Saint Clair Family Estate prides itself in achieving distinction in the vineyard. This quality is reflected in the assortment of medals and trophies awarded from not only this unique wine show but also many others around the globe.
