Saint Clair Famliy Estate has shown outstanding quality amongst some of the world’s best wines at the Mondial du Merlot International Wine Competition where the Saint Clair Rapaura Reserve Merlot 2010 has been awarded an esteemed Gold Medal.
The Mondial du Merlot is an International Wine Competition hosted in Zurich, Switzerland which is open to all producers/distributors/importers of wines made from 51% or more of the Merlot grape variety. Both single varietal wines as well as blends are eligible to enter making this a fierce competition.
The Merlot grape variety typically flourishes in warmer climates with two thirds of the world’s production being placed in France. New Zealand production is very small on the world scale with most New Zealand Merlot being planted in the warmer Hawkes Bay region. The Rapaura Reserve Merlot is sourced from a single vineyard on a particularly warm site of Marlborough. This small low cropping vineyard produces a concentrated grape enabling the world class Saint Clair winemaking team to craft a wine bursting with dark fruit, spice and smoky bacon.
This Gold Medal recognition for the family owned Marlborough winery suggests their success lies not only in Sauvignon Blanc Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Consistently displaying quality, this leading New Zealand wine producer is synonymous with wines of excellence.
